Are you paying attention? Possibly not.

Most speech is paced at about 150 words per minute.

Comprehension, understanding what you hear, can operate at up to 600 words per minute.

On that basis you have plenty of opportunity to take a mental break when you should be listening!

I'm sorry, could you say that again? I drifted off for a moment there.

In a coaching dialogue the ideal balance is 20% coach-talk and 80% coachee-talk. If the coach isn't actively listening the impact on the coaching dialogue and the confidence of the coachee in the coach can be disastrous.

Four keys to active listening.

1. Posture sit up, lean forward slightly and breathe from the abdomen.

2. Check back and paraphrase. So, if I understand you correctly, What I hear you saying is, etc.

3. Encourage not just with what is said but with open gestures, nods and smiles.

4. Follow the direction of the dialogue ask questions that follow the direction of the speaker, not the thoughts of you as the listener.
